| 16:40 | Standards for next generation gaming (F.Lete - Larian Studios) |
| In their continuing quest for bringing better entertainment to the masses, game developers have to deal with a large quantity of multimedia assets. These range from 3D meshes, textures, and animations to sound and video files. Since this is a field where consumer technology is often pushed beyond its limits and where game engines have to operate within tight constraints, game developers are regularly forced to create their own custom formats. Needless to say this has significantly hindered standardization of tools and technology exchange. With the age of next generation gaming approaching, the need for standards has never been so high and there is some momentum within the industry to converge to common standards. This talk will give an overview of the multimedia needs within the games industry, what standards are being looked at, and where things might be heading in the future. | |
