| 16:00 | UPnP interoperability: working on the (dis)connected home (S.Motte - Philips) | |
| The CE industry has rightly recognized the opportunity created by the growing digital media collections many people are gathering on their PCs and numbers of home (wireless) networks emerging in their homes. Many CE manufacturers have developed networked digital media links, which leverage the existing IT infrastructure (i.e. wired or wireless networks) in order to bring all of this content from the PC into the living room. Thus creating a network of both CE and IT devices, interoperability becomes key, both within and outside one brand. In this presentation we will describe how Philips, together with the rest of the industry, has embraced standardization initiatives such as UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) in order to achieve this. We will give an introduction on the standards, and discuss what they do and don't cover, together with their strengts and weaknesses. We will also present the lessons learned by applying them both in a product and advanced development context, and by participating to the regular cross-industry interoperability testing events. |
