1st work meeting

imec, 27 april 2005
The goal of the meeting is to have interactive sessions:
- Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
- Discussing operational issues of the community.
- Discussing upcoming activities.
| 13:30 | Welcome + sandwich lunch |
| 14:00 | Intro (P.Six) |
| 14:10 | Latest standardisation developments in MPEG video coding (J.Bormans / B.Massschelein - IMEC) |
| Currently, MPEG attracts a lot of participation with its novel video coding technologies. This presentation gives an overview of the latest developments in the field of Scalable Video Coding (SVC) and its relationship to AVC/H.264, including the latest news from MPEG's April 2005 meeting. Additionally, a short outlook on possible future direction in MPEG video activities will be given. | |
| 14:50 | Latest developments in JPEG image coding (P.Schelkens - VUB) |
| JPEG2000 is a new image codin system that uses state-of-the-art compression techniques based on wavelet technology. Its architecture should lend itself to a wide range of uses from portable digital cameras through to advanced pre-press, medical imaging and other key sectors. JPEG2000 refers to all parts of the standard: Part 1 (the core) is now published as an International Standard, five more parts (2-6) are complete or nearly complete, and four new parts (JPSEC, JPIP, JP3D and JPWL) are under development. In this talk an overview will be given of current activities in the JPEG committee. | |
| 15:30 | Break + Coffee |
| 16:00 | Interoperability does not exist (B.Bonneu - Siemens) |
| Have you ever naively tried to build a complete digital security system, by combining the components of your choice? Interoperability, defined as the ability of hard- and software from different vendors to work together, does not exist in digital video. This will be demonstrated by explaining the problems encoutered in a few project examples. |
|
| 16:40 | The use of MPEG4 in real-time low-latency applications (P.Verhoeve - Televic) |
| This presentation will consist of two parts: in a first part, a brief overview of the multimedia activities in Televic will be given. The second part of the presentation will focus on the technical requirements of applications used in multimedia classroom learning systems, one of Televic's niche markets. Besides pointing out the actual constraints relating to a.o. latency and live digitalisation, the presentation will give illustrations based upon experimental results obtained on a realistic system. | |
| 17:20 | Questions and Answers (moderator: P.Six). |
| 17:50 | Upcoming events (moderator: P.Six) |
