7th work meeting

imec, 8 maart 2007 (Only for members)
The goal of the work meeting is to have interactive sessions:
- Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
- Discussing operational issues of the community.
- Discussing upcoming activities.
| 13:30 | Registration + Welcome/Coffee |
| 14:00 | Overview of the community status |
| 14:10 | Multimedia activities in the e-lab of Hogeschool Antwerpen (T.Dams – HA) |
| The e-lab of the Hogeschool Antwerpen is a research group of the department for applied sciences. One of its focuses is in the field of multimedia where they mainly conduct applied research in corporation with other universities (mainly UA and VUB). Their topics range from region-of-interest coding in video codecs, over medical image processing, to digital watermarking. | |
| 14:50 | Update on recent developments in MPEG and ITU-T video standards, and detailed technical update on Multiview Video Coding (G. Lafruit – IMEC) |
| This presentation will first provide a high level overview of the recent developments in the MPEG and ITU-T video compression standards, followed by a technical overview of the status of the Multiview Video Coding (MVC). MVC standardization is a joint collaboration between the ITU-T Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC MPEG Video Group. This presentation will also introduce the concept of Free View Point systems, whose compression needs are addressed by MVC. | |
| 15:30 | Break + Coffee |
| 16:00 | IPTV Quality Assessment and Monitoring (D. De Vleeschauwer – Alcatel-Lucent) |
| Assessing video quality, more specifically, defining a computational method that predicts the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) a representative audience would assign to a certain video, is a very hard problem. Traditionally, the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) has been used to compare a distorted image with its original, but some more recent variants in which spatial masking has been taken into account perform (slightly) better (in the sense that their output correlates better with the MOS). In order to compare (distorted with original) sequences some of these metrics have been extended, but hardly any of these extensions take temporal masking into account and none of them can adequately deal with severe quality fluctuations. Other recent approaches only require the distorted sequence or even only the bit stream of the encoded video sequence. Although all these methods have their own drawbacks, and, in general, no metric reacts to all kinds of distortion as a human audience would do, in a restricted environment they can serve a specific purpose. In this presentation we consider how these metrics can be used to keep the quality of IPTV delivery under control. | |
| 16:40 | Atos Origin and Digital Media Applications (A. van Gerwen – Atos Origin) |
| Atos Origin is an international information technology services company. Atos Origin is involved in the developement of Digital Media applications a various area's. Examples of those area's are Digital Interactive TV development. Tv on Mobile applications and IPTV. In this presentation Aad van Gerwen will give an overview of these applications. | |
