14:10 MultiMedia Platforms: IMEC’s Research in MultiMedia
(W.Verachtert - IMEC)
During the last 4 years IMEC executed the 'M4' research program in close collaboration with companies. This research focused on the Wireless and MultiMedia aspects of next generation mobile devices. We present an overview of the multimedia research topics and the results that were achieved in this research program: scalable multimedia platforms, Scalable Video Codec, Quality of Experience, ... The last part of the presentation will focus on the future steps we will take in our MultiMedia research: MultiMedia Platform Components and MultiView.
14:50 Hybrid Video Requirements in a Private Industrial Fibre Optic Network
(G. Verbanck - Nokia Siemens Networks)
This presentation discusses the typical requirements and problems faced in transmission and mixed use of analog and digital video for large private industrial customers. Evolutions in the wanted video-applications will also be highlighted, as well as technological issues faced in the realisation of these requirements with technology which is typically developed with multimedia and consumer applications in mind.
15:30 Break + Coffee
16:00 Software OpenAPI’s in mobile & portable devices
(B.Smets – NXP Semiconductors)
The complexity of handset devices is increasing heavily with the introduction of sophisticated media processing. This revolution is a big opportunity for application developers but the complexity brings difficulties in investments (e.g. a game title seems to cost more to port to platforms than to develop) and reaching time-to-market. Application availability is key to sell silicon. Royalty-free multi-media OpenAPI’s, as under standardization by the Khronos group, provide a solid foundation to promote an ecosystem and enable market growth. This lecture describes the technology and benefits from migrating from proprietary software API’s via Khronos standardized API’s (e.g. OpenMAX) towards API suites for mobile & portable devices.
16:40 Unequal Error Protection
(P.Schelkens – VUBrussels)
abstract to be added.
17:20 Community activities and upcoming events.
17:40 Drink
