9th work meeting

imec, 11 oktober 2007 (Only for members)
The goal of the work meetings is to have interactive sessions:
- Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
- Discussing operational issues of the community.
- Discussing upcoming activities.
| 13:30 | Registration + Welcome/Coffee |
| 14:00 | Overview of the community status |
| 14:10 | Integrated media production in a broadcaster environment - VRT Medialab research overview Luk Overmeire - VRT Medialab Business Architect |
| Nowadays, broadcasters are faced with two important new trends: the adoption of IT technology and related file-based workflows for broadcast quality media production on the one hand and the upcoming breakthrough of High Definition Television on the other hand. This brings along unprecented advantages such as higher picture quality, concurrent engineering and faster than real-time processing. However, it also introduces new, complex challenges in multiple domains of the media production chain: efficient integration of different systems, reasonable use of file formats for media storage and exchange, intelligent data and information modelling, deliberate selection of media coding formats for both low and high resolution media editing and viewing, ... For VRT, these are strategic topics which are dealt with in different research tracks of VRT Medialab. This presentation gives an overview of these research projects with a special focus on standard media and file formats. | |
| 14:50 | Designing reliable vision applications Sidharta Gautama - Universiteit Gent |
| Extracting information from image and video data has grown in importance over the last decade. Leaps in sensor technology and advanced processing have opened up application domains like remote sensing, mobile mapping, medical image processing and security. With respect to typical machine vision applications, the challenge lies in handling an environment which holds less constraints in terms of object appearance, environment conditions and dynamics. In this talk, we will highlight a number of case studies where automation is feasible. Paramount in this work is the reliability of the system. This means we should be able to predict and control the performance of the system in operation in order to design the correct system for a given application. | |
| 15:30 | Break + Coffee |
| 16:00 | JPEG Systems: an architecture for digital imaging Tim Bruylants – VUBrussels |
| JPEG Systems is a new work item of the JPEG committee that aims at integrating a wide range of existing and new image coding schemes, in order to deliver a wide range of imaging applications, across many platforms and technologies. JPEG2000 is set to become an important part in this new work item, because of its recent market success in many areas, like for instance digital cinema, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and medical imaging (both 2D and 3D). A lot of the work on the JPEG2000 series of standard parts has many applications at a more generic level, extending well beyond the scope of the JPEG2000 core coding standard (i.e. Part 1). Another new proposed standard for JPEG Systems is JPEG-XR which is designed explicitly for the next generation of digital cameras and is heavily based on the technology created by Microsoft in its Windows Media Format proposals, at present known as HD Photo. This presentation will give an overview of the current status of JPEG2000 (with special focus on JP3D) and JPEG-XR, both in the context of JPEG Systems. | |
| 16:40 | Emerging JPEG2000 applications: Digital Cinema and Wireless home Olivier Cantineau – Barco-Silex |
| The JPEG2000 algorithm is penetrating new markets and applications. Digital Cinema has already adopted JPEG2000 through its DCI standard. Other applications may follow soon, such as wireless home and office, for which JPEG2000 offers advantages over other video compression standards. In the presentation we will review JPEG2000 potential in these applications and show available technical solutions. | |
