11th work meeting

imec, 15 mei 2008 (Only for members)

The goal of the work meetings is to have interactive sessions:

  • Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
  • Discussing operational issues of the community.
  • Discussing upcoming activities.
The agenda of work meeting 11 is shown below.

13:30 Registration + Welcome/Coffee
14:00 Overview of the community status
14:20 Scene understanding... an old dream coming true
Luc Van Gool – KULeuven
Recent developments in object recognition, and especially in object class recognition are discussed. This means recognizing types of objects (cars, cows, people) rather than specific objects. The latter capability is quite new to computer vision, but can be expected to impact on all kinds of other visual processes like stereo depth extraction or object tracking.
15:00 Living Labs … a missing link in the innovation value network
Marc De Colvenaer – i-City
Based on the experience of the i-City Living Lab in Hasselt and Leuven, the Living Lab concept will be positioned as a key instrument to demonstrate, test and valorize innovative multimedia applications and services. Some of the results of the last user survey, experiences from the last projects, new projects in the pipeline, etc. will be presented.
15:40 Break
Coffee
16:10 Multimedia R&D at IBBT-IBCN research group
Piet Demeester – Ugent
As a telecommunications and software research group, our multimedia research is captured from the network perspective taking into account not only applications', but also network issues. This presentation will give an overview of our work in this area, and will also elaborate on the extensive infrastructure available, the iLab.t.
16:50 Participation TV, a staged participatory multimedia event framework
Sigurd Van Broeck – Alcatel-Lucent
The Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Participation TV framework (or prototyped platform) enables everybody to create, to interact and view with a virtual multimedia stage (like on iTV, mobile, Internet). Interaction through a dedicated layer is abstracting input handling on the different hosting platforms. The view is generated using video composition descriptors building on the power of SMIL. All this is directed by a network centric orchestrator handling events and controlling the different states throughout the complete multimedia scenario. Through the framework everybody can finally create, host and play their own TV show using their preferred device.
17:30 Close + Drink
