12th MuMe Work Meeting

imec, 12 maart 2009 (Only for members)
The goal of the work meetings is to have interactive sessions amongst the MuMe-Community members:
- Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
- Discussing operational issues of the community.
- Discussing upcoming activities.
| 13:30 | Registration + Welcome/Coffee |
| 14:00 | Overview of the community status Kris Hermus - IMEC |
| 14:20 | On HD codecs in a broadcast environment Tom Beckers - VRT-medialab |
| The introduction of HD in the television production and broadcast industry has lead to the introduction of a new generation of HD capable compression schemes. The competing codecs will be described and the parameters determining the suitability of a codec in the professional broadcast industry will be summarized. Picture quality, arguably the most important parameter, will be focused on : the evaluation methods to determine quality will be overviewed and results of these evaluation methods will be evaluated. | |
| 15:00 | Scalable video codec: implementation, adaptation and cross-layer control Carolina Blanch, Bart Masschelein – IMEC |
| This presentation will show some achievements made in the field of Scalable Video Coding at IMEC, based on two demonstrators. In a first demo, an end-to-end video delivery chain for scalable H.264/AVC video (SVC) is build, showing some important components: transparent on-the-fly bitstream adaptation, bitstream optimization based on external QoS/QoE information, and real-time SVC video decoding. As the limited battery capacity of the portable devices becomes a main challenge in wireless video communication, a second demo shows how to minimize the total energy consumption by using a cross-layer controller that steers at run-time the configuration of the major energy consumers in a handheld device: both the SVC encoder and the wireless transmitter. | |

| 16:10 | High Quality Remote Display Jean-François Gobbers – Barco N.V. |
| Desktop and application virtualization has become mainstream in the enterprise, and IT organizations have to provide the same level of quality of experience to users as when using a traditional PC with locally installed software. While standard 2D applications are relatively easy to efficiently transfer between server and client devices, user interfaces are rapidly evolving towards much richer multimedia oriented environments, mixing standard 2D content with high performance 3D graphics and multi-channel audio, controlled not only via mouse and keyboard, but also via innovative human interface devices. Additionally, high performance visualization based markets, like Oil&Gas (prospection) or Control Rooms (monitoring)), pose additional challenges to leading-edge display technology companies like Barco, by requiring for example solutions able to transfer stereoscopic content, distribute rendering, or even distribute displaying. During this presentation, we will first describe the problem of transfering high quality multimedia content to potentially heterogeneous devices. We will then present a number of existing solutions, and conclude by describing innovative technologies used in this context (multiview video coding, GPU-based scraping, ...). | |
| 16:50 | Embedded World 2009 – Impressions of the latest embedded trends Björn Van de Vondel – DSP Valley vzw |
| From March 3rd until March 5th 2009, the embedded community gathers in Nürnberg for the Embedded World Exhibition and Conference. For the seventh time in a row, DSP Valley participates in this yearly exhibition, sharing a booth with seven of its members. Traditionally this exhibition is an indicator for the latest developments in the Embedded market. For the MultiMedia Community, DSP Valley will provide an overview on the latest trends, components and most interesting applications in the field of MultiMedia. | |
