13th MuMe Work Meeting

imec, 16 juni 2009 (Only for members)

The goal of the work meetings is to have interactive sessions amongst the MuMe-Community members:

  • Discussing recent evolutions of multimedia techniques.
  • Discussing operational issues of the community.
  • Discussing upcoming activities.
The final programme of work meeting 13 is shown below.

13:30 Registration
Welcome/Coffee
14:00 MuMe: new members, and exploring new horizons
Kris Hermus, Business Program Manager - IMEC
With 6 new members since our previous work meeting in March 2009, the MuMe Community is strengthening its member base and exploring new horizons. We will welcome our new members, and give a snapshot of their R&D activities. Finally, a short overview of the MuMe status will be given.
14:30 Sound and acoustics innovation @ NXP
Simon Doclo, Principal Scientist - NXP Semiconductors
This presentation will give an overview of the innovation activities of the Sound & Acoustics group of NXP Leuven. This group focuses on the development and porting of sound enhancement algorithms, ranging from hands-free voice communication for mobile phones to surround sound reproduction with loudspeaker arrays and active noise reduction for headsets and cars.
15:10 Smartcams in cars
Peter Veelaert, Professor - University College Ghent
The introduction of intelligent cameras in vehicles will change the way we drive. To illustrate what may be expected in the near future we discuss concrete examples such as road sign recognition, real-time texture classification and pedestrian detection and tracking. We also indicate some of the remaining challenges that require new, more robust computer vision algorithms as well as further advances in embedded systems technology.
15:50 Break
Coffee
16:15 Speech technology: what’s under the hood and where can it drive me ?
Hugo Van hamme, Professor – K.U.Leuven-ESAT
Having a conversation with a machine is very natural in science fiction. It was also promised to us about a decade ago. But where are we today ? In this presentation, we discuss the state-of-the-art in speech synthesis and speech recognition. The main principles adopted in these technologies are explained in order to get a better understanding of their capabilities and limitations. Then, we move on to the main research challenges. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the technologies with examples from the field.
16:55 Use of microphone techniques in Televic's next-generation products
Bart De Schuymer, Senior Development Engineer – Televic nv
In its conferencing department, Televic is moving towards the use of microphone arrays as a means of improving both the captured sound and the user's experience. The replacement of analog microphones by digital microphones is also investigated as this enables a simplified hardware design and reduces the internal noise of the equipment. The combination of both technologies, digital microphone arrays, is also being investigated. This talk will cover these topics along with related research in cooperation with academic partners.
17:35 Closing
Networking drink with sandwiches
