Image Processing System (IPS) research community continues as Audiovisual Systems (AVS) research community.

VUB continues coordination of the Audiovisual Systems research community network, a continuation of the 2 previous research community networks on Image Processing systems.

The Audiovisual Systems (AVS) research community is a scientific network, financed by the Scientific Research Fund of Flanders (FWO), for the period 2006-2010. The community is a continuation of a 2 similar networks, which have been successively running under the name 'Image Processing Systems (IPS) Research Community', during the period 1996-2000 and 2001-2005.

The partners of IPS have observed that signal processing systems evolve such that the interaction between both the audio and the visual components cannot be ignored anymore. Moreover, 3D graphics has been identified as a booming research area. Consequently – besides its original focus – the construction, the structuring and the support of scientific collaboration in fundamental research between the image processing and audio processing communities in Flanders, namely on the subject of multi-modal analysis, is an important challenge for the AVS community. Applications are many: biometrics, audiovisual scene and archive analysis, audiovisual rendering, ...
